About Dr. Erik A. Thorson

Dr. Erik A. Thorson has been an educator most of his adult life. Erik was born and raised in the Philadelphia suburbs and attended the prestigious Lower Merion Senior High School in Ardmore, Pennsylvania in the Main Line. He played Varsity Soccer and Baseball at Lower Merion and continued his athletic career as an outstanding baseball player at New England College in Henniker New Hampshire. Thorson earned a B.A in Communications from New England College.  After graduating undergraduate school in the early 90’s Erik tried his hand in acting and modeling and spent six years traveling and working in various cities like Miami, New York, Philadelphia and Los Angeles. Dr. Thorson has some acting credits that include Gordon’s Furniture Company, Psychic Friends Network with Deon Warwick (where he was a regular), Miami Herald, several MTV music videos and small day player roles in movies filmed in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Philadelphia, New York and Los Angeles.  He was also a regular model for the IPCO Safety Equipment catalogue. Thorson also is a competent piano player and also wrote some songs in the 90’s that he patented at the Library of Congress.

Thorson’s educational career took off in 1996 where he started as substitute teacher and championship winning coach in the Cleveland Public Schools. He later continued his education by obtaining a Master’s Degree from John Carroll University in Ohio to become a licensed Ohio principal. He earned his doctorate from Nova Southeastern University in Florida in 2008. Thorson has served in many administrative roles in the public schools before settling in to his true passion, that being school choice. For the last ten years, Dr. Thorson has managed, founded, and operated schools in Ohio and Florida and has had major influence on some very successful Charter Schools in his career. The following are schools he was directly involved in their success: Academy of Arts and Sciences, Lorain Preparatory Academy, Monroe Preparatory Academy and many others. Dr. Thorson is now the operator of three wonderfully successful Montessori Programs in Florida. The schools he operates are Educational Horizons Charter an “A” rated school in Brevard County Florida, the prestigious Suntree Montessori Private Pre School and Country Day for Children Montessori Pre-School. Dr. Thorson’s curriculum of choice is Montessori for two major reasons. The first being the Montessori influence on early literacy and reading at four years old and secondly the hands on aspect of learning Montessori preach along with the discovery element.  Dr. Thorson has a lovely family that include his wife Janie of 26 years, son Christopher A. Thorson and daughter’s Alexandria and Abigail.
